What is a Gundam Model Kit? A Beginner's Guide to Gunpla

Thank you for visiting or welcome back to the blog.

Gundam model kits, popularly known as Gunpla (short for "Gundam plastic model"), have captured the hearts of hobbyists and anime fans worldwide. Whether you're a seasoned builder or just curious about the hobby, this comprehensive guide will introduce you to the fascinating world of Gunpla. Let's dive into what Gundam model kits are, their history, and how you can start building your own.

What is a Gundam Model Kit?

A Gundam model kit is a plastic model based on the mecha (giant robots) from the Gundam anime series. These kits allow enthusiasts to build and customize their own versions of the iconic mobile suits. Gundam, created by Sunrise studios, debuted in 1979 with the series "Mobile Suit Gundam" and has since become a cultural phenomenon, spawning numerous series, movies, and an extensive line of merchandise.

The Origins of Gunpla

Gunpla has its roots in the early 1980s when Bandai, a leading Japanese toy company, launched the first series of Gundam model kits. These early kits were relatively simple, but they laid the foundation for what would become a beloved hobby worldwide. Over the decades, Bandai has continually improved the design, engineering, and variety of their Gunpla kits, making them more detailed, customizable, and accessible to builders of all skill levels.

Types of Gundam Model Kits

Gunpla kits are categorized based on their complexity, scale, and articulation. Here are the main types:

  1. High Grade (HG): These 1/144 scale kits are perfect for beginners. They are affordable, relatively simple to assemble, and offer a good balance of detail and articulation.

  2. Real Grade (RG): Also 1/144 scale, RG kits provide more intricate details and advanced articulation compared to HG kits, making them ideal for intermediate builders.

  3. Master Grade (MG): At a larger 1/100 scale, MG kits feature highly detailed parts and complex construction. They are suited for experienced builders who enjoy a challenge.

  4. Perfect Grade (PG): These 1/60 scale kits are the pinnacle of Gunpla engineering, offering the highest level of detail, articulation, and complexity. PG kits are best suited for expert builders due to their intricate assembly process and higher cost.

  5. Super Deformed (SD): These kits feature a unique, stylized design with exaggerated proportions, making them fun and easy to build for all ages.

Getting Started with Gunpla

Building a Gundam model kit is a rewarding and creative hobby that anyone can enjoy. Here's a basic guide to get you started:

1. Choose Your Kit

Select a kit that matches your skill level and interests. For beginners, an HG or EG (Bandai's recent line of Entry Grade level kits featuring an even simpler build process but still possesses great articulation) kit is a great starting point.

2. Gather Your Tools

Basic tools for Gunpla building include:

  • Side cutters or nippers for removing parts from the sprues
  • A hobby knife for trimming excess plastic
  • Sandpaper or sanding sticks for smoothing edges (optional)
  • Tweezers for handling small parts and stickers/decals
  • Plastic cement (optional) for a more secure build (or fixing accidental damage, it happens. LOL)

3. Follow the Instructions

Each kit comes with a detailed instruction manual. Follow it step-by-step to ensure proper assembly. Patience and attention to detail are key.

The manuals of kits designed before about 2019 only have Japanese instructional text but thankfully the parts are alphanumerically labelled so a kit can still be built relatively easily. There is always Google Translate on your smartphone.

4. Customize and Paint

Once assembled, you can customize your Gunpla with paint, decals, and additional detailing. This is where your creativity can really shine. Painting is optional though as the kit's parts are colour separated according to the design its based upon. Some colour correcting stickers will be included in some kits (more common among the HG line).

5. Display and Enjoy

Show off your completed model by displaying it on a shelf or in a dedicated display case. Join online communities or local clubs to share your work and connect with fellow Gunpla enthusiasts.

The Joy of Gunpla

Gunpla is more than just a hobby; it's a way to express creativity, develop fine motor skills, and connect with a global community of fans. Whether you're building your first HG kit or tackling an intricate PG model, the satisfaction of completing a Gundam model kit is unmatched.
